International Curriculum: Choosing Subjects for University

Choosing subjects in an international curriculum starts with the university courses you may want to study. A subject combination should keep relevant options open while matching your interests, strengths, and school provision. The most demanding combination is not automatically the most useful one.

IGCSE, A Level, and the IB Diploma Programme belong to different stages or qualification structures. Compare the exact qualification, subjects, and levels rather than treating “international curriculum” as one uniform pathway.

Separate qualification choices from subject choices

First, identify the qualification your school offers and the university entry routes it supports. Then examine the subjects within that qualification. At this stage, ask which options are compulsory, available, or restricted by your school timetable.

Cambridge International AS and A Level allow subject specialisation, while the IB Diploma Programme combines subject groups with its core. These structural differences affect workload and planning. They do not establish that one qualification is universally better for every student.

Read university prerequisites before deciding

Choose a few possible degree courses and open their current admissions pages. Record the required subjects, levels, and grades, together with the qualification and entry year. Distinguish requirements from subjects described as useful or preferred.

For example, an applicant considering engineering should check the exact mathematics and science requirements of each intended course. Do not assume that every engineering department accepts the same subject combination. Requirements for a course at one university cannot establish eligibility elsewhere.

Check the level, not just the subject name

In the IB Diploma Programme, the distinction between Higher Level and Standard Level matters when a university specifies a level. Mathematics course options also need to be matched to the wording of the requirement. Ask your school counsellor for help when the equivalence is unclear.

For Cambridge qualifications, confirm whether an institution requires full A Levels, accepts AS Levels in a particular route, or has other conditions. Use the official Cambridge subject information alongside the university's policy.

Build a small decision matrix

Create one row per intended degree course. Include required subjects, preferred subjects, expected grades, assessment demands, and questions for the admissions office. Mark any option that your current combination would close.

Then discuss workload with teachers. Consider the types of tasks involved, such as essays, problem solving, practical work, or coursework. Interest matters because sustained study involves more than performing well in one examination.

Review the decision before change deadlines

If you may change a subject or level, ask the school about deadlines and the work required to catch up. A late switch can affect coursework and assessment preparation. Do not change your combination based only on a general internet recommendation.

For subject-specific academic support, explore Lister's international curriculum programme. Bring the syllabus, qualification details, and university prerequisites. The goal is to support your learning within the pathway you actually follow, while admission decisions remain with the receiving institutions.
