Learning Indonesian as an Australian can support travel, family connections, work, or study. Your best starting point depends on what you can already do in the language and how you intend to use it. Choose a practical goal before a level
If you studied Indonesian at school, describe what you can still understand and say rather than calling yourself a complete beginner by default. A short conversation and a writing sample can help a tutor identify gaps. For a first visit, you might prioritise introductions, ordering food, transport, numbers, and polite requests.
What do BIPA levels 1–7 mean?
The official Sahabatku Indonesia learning series includes BIPA 1 through BIPA 7. These stages organise Indonesian language learning; a short commercial package is not automatically one complete official level. Ask how a provider chooses material for your starting point and checks progress across speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
BIPA levels are different from UKBI ranks
UKBI results use seven ranks from I (Istimewa) to VII (Terbatas). The order and purpose differ from a course level numbered 1–7. Do not assume that finishing BIPA 3 means obtaining UKBI rank III, or that a course certificate replaces the official test result. Check the exact requirement with your university, employer, or scholarship organiser.
Plan the time zone carefully
Australia and Indonesia each have multiple time zones. Some Australian locations observe daylight saving and others do not. Tell the provider your city, confirm the scheduled time in both locations, and revisit the booking when clocks change. Online classes still depend on tutor availability; flexible scheduling is not unlimited availability.
Practise language in context
- Use polite openers such as “Permisi” before a question and “Terima kasih” afterwards.
- Practise a short introduction, then ask the other person a follow-up question.
- Listen to short Indonesian recordings and summarise what you understood.
- Ask a tutor to explain when formal and informal expressions are suitable instead of assuming every phrase works in every setting.
Prepare for study or work separately from travel
For university, bring examples of the tasks you expect: reading instructions, discussing ideas, giving presentations, or writing paragraphs. For work, identify meetings and messages that cause difficulty. A clear goal helps the tutor choose appropriate language practice; a language course does not guarantee admission, employment, or visa approval.
