Dalam bahasa Inggris, puisi disebut dengan poem atau poetry. Puisi merupakan salah satu bentuk penulisan kreatif.
Dikutip dari Writers, puisi adalah sarana ekspresi diri yang mengandung emosi dan bersifat liris. Puisi menggunakan berbagai elemen untuk menampilkan perasaan dan gagasan.
Tujuan puisi adalah membangkitkan perasaan si pembaca. Karakter lain yang menonjol dari puisi adalah sifatnya yang padat tetapi memiliki pengaruh yang kuat, sehingga pemilihan kata sangat penting.

Elemen dalam Puisi
Ada beberapa elemen yang mendukung keindahan puisi bahasa Inggris. Bukan hanya penggunaan kata yang mempengaruhi bunyi namun juga pemilihan kata-kata indahnya yang membuat puisi semakin estetik.
a. Bunyi (Sound)
Bunyi dapat menimbulkan berbagai efek saat puisi dibaca, contohnya menekankan pesan yang penting atau menciptakan imajinasi melalui kata-kata. Efek bunyi dapat muncul dari penggunaan aliterasi, asonansi, dan konsonansi.

Rima dalam puisi juga menciptakan efek musikal, sehingga menarik didengar. Rima dapat muncul di bagian mana saja dalam puisi, tidak hanya di akhir baris.

d. Bentuk (Format)
Salah satu hal yang paling membedakan puisi dengan penulisan kreatif lainnya adalah bentuknya. Puisi tidak menggunakan bentuk yang sama dengan prosa.
Bahkan bentuk puisi bisa jadi sangat acak, mulai dari pemenggalan kalimat yang tidak lazim, baris kosong, satu baris yang hanya terdiri dari satu kata, hingga penempatan kata untuk membuat bentuk tertentu di halaman.
Perbedaan lain yang mencolok adalah prosa menggunakan bentuk kalimat dan paragraf, sedangkan dalam puisi terdapat bait, baris, dan jeda baris. Umumnya, setiap bait dalam puisi menggunakan pola tertentu.
